Cotton: Friend or Foe?

cotton

I can just hear the jingle now: “Cotton, the fabric of our lives.” But is it really? For the most part, we focus primarily on looks, price and feel. Is this shirt in my favorite color? Is it within my budget? Does it feel right on my body? But when you think harder about it, you realize that these questions are only relevant to yourself. Shopping for a child is entirely different. This is your child. Your flesh and blood. Your whole world. Who cares about price? You would chop off your legs if it meant providing the best you can for that child.

The majority of clothes of made from cotton. We don’t think twice about it because that is what’s available. Moms are a little different. When you look into cotton as a material for clothing, you start to learn some unpleasant facts. What it comes down to is that conventionally grown cotton contain residual insecticides that can be harmful to baby. As adults our immune systems are much stronger so residual poison doesn’t have bad effects. For an infant that hasn’t been on Earth for too long, these chemicals could be bad.

So, what’s a mom to do?

You don’t necessarily have to throw away all your cotton clothing right now. Rather, just put it aside until baby is stronger and can handle such products. Until then, you’ll want to dress baby in something that is going to be comfortable yet not pose any threats to his or her health. This means purchasing baby clothes, bibs, etc. in organic materials. This can include hemp, bamboo, wool, cashmere or even organic cotton. These materials are safe for both mom and baby so you won’t have to worry about an unpleasant surprise occurring.
